It’s tempting to let the builder pick a 3-ton unit and move on. But the right system size for your home depends on far more than square footage. A Manual J load calculation considers insulation values, window area and orientation, ceiling height, air infiltration, internal heat gains, and your local climate data. Two homes with identical floor plans can need different equipment sizes if they face different directions or have different window packages.

Given the extreme summer temperatures that attics reach in this area, we insulate duct runs to R-8 minimum and seal all connections with mastic to prevent conditioned air from leaking into unconditioned space. Every leak in the attic is money lost.
Equipment Suited to the Location
Southern Vermilion Parish’s proximity to the coast means outdoor equipment faces higher salt and moisture exposure than equipment in Lafayette or Opelousas. For new construction in Gueydan, we recommend condensers with coated coils and corrosion-resistant finishes. The cost difference is modest, but the life expectancy improvement is meaningful.
We also pay attention to condenser pad elevation. In low-lying areas (common in this part of the parish), raising the outdoor unit reduces the risk of flood damage and keeps the coil away from ground-level debris and standing water.
