Every new construction project starts with a Manual J load calculation. This isn’t a rough estimate based on square footage. We work from your architectural plans and factor in wall insulation R-values, window sizes and orientations, ceiling heights, roofing material, and the number of occupants. In Vermilion Parish, the cooling load dominates because summers run hot and humid from May through October, but heating load still matters for those raw, damp January mornings.
Duct Layout and Sizing
Manual D duct design means every run is sized for the airflow it needs to deliver. Poor duct design is the single biggest reason new homes end up with hot and cold spots. We coordinate with your builder early so ductwork routes are planned before framing is complete, not squeezed in as an afterthought. Trunk lines, branch runs, and return air paths all get mapped to your floor plan.
Why New Construction Gives You Better Options
A retrofit is always a compromise. You’re limited by existing duct routes, electrical capacity, and equipment locations. With new construction, you can choose high-efficiency variable-speed equipment, plan dedicated return air paths for every zone, and install properly sized ductwork with short, direct runs that minimize energy loss.
For two-story homes (which are becoming more common in Abbeville’s newer developments), zoning is worth serious consideration. A single thermostat can’t manage the temperature difference between a ground floor and a second story that collects rising heat all afternoon. A zoned system with separate thermostats lets each floor maintain its own setpoint.
