What We Check During an AC Tune-Up
Our factory-trained technicians follow a thorough checklist during every cooling season tune-up:
- Refrigerant charge: we measure refrigerant levels and check for leaks. Low refrigerant is one of the most common causes of poor cooling performance and high energy bills in South Louisiana, where systems run hard for six or seven months straight. All refrigerant work follows EPA regulations.
- Evaporator and condenser coils. Dirty coils reduce heat transfer and force your compressor to work overtime. We clean the outdoor condenser coil, check the indoor evaporator coil, and inspect both for corrosion, which is common in our humid, salt-air environment.
- Electrical connections: we inspect and tighten all electrical connections, test capacitors, and measure voltage and amperage on motors. A failing capacitor is the single most common cause of AC breakdowns we see in this area.
- Condensate drain. Louisiana humidity produces a lot of condensate. A clogged drain line can cause water damage, trigger a safety shutoff, or create conditions for mold growth inside your air handler.
- Thermostat calibration, we verify your thermostat is reading accurately and cycling the system properly. Even a two-degree error means your system is either short-cycling or running longer than it needs to.
- Air filter: we check your filter and recommend replacement if it’s restricting airflow. During South Louisiana’s pollen season, filters can clog faster than most homeowners expect.
- Blower motor and fan. We check the blower motor amperage, lubricate bearings where applicable, and verify proper airflow across the evaporator coil.
Why Tune-Ups Matter More in South Louisiana
In parts of the country where AC runs three or four months a year, skipping a tune-up might not catch up with you for a while. In Acadiana, your air conditioner runs from April through October — sometimes longer. That’s six to seven months of near-continuous operation, often in extreme humidity that accelerates wear on every component.
The combination of heat, humidity, and salt air means coils corrode faster, drain lines clog more frequently, and electrical components degrade sooner than the national averages would suggest. An annual tune-up accounts for these local realities. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends professional maintenance at least once a year to keep systems running efficiently.
