Emergency HVAC Service Reaches the Duck Capital
Gueydan is a tight community of about 1,300 people in southern Vermilion Parish, known for duck hunting, rice farming, and a way of life built around the marshlands to the south. It’s also a community where your HVAC options for after-hours service are limited. Most companies based in Lafayette won’t send a technician past Abbeville for a Saturday night call.
F & R Air Conditioning is based in Abbeville, about 15 minutes north of Gueydan. We offer after-hours emergency service, and we don’t draw a line on a map that excludes the smaller communities in our parish. When your AC goes out during a July heat wave or your furnace stops working during a January cold snap, we come.
Understanding When to Call
HVAC problems range from mild annoyances to genuine safety hazards. Knowing which category yours falls into helps you decide whether to call at 11 PM or wait until 8 AM.
Call Right Away
Your AC has stopped completely during dangerous heat. Southern Vermilion Parish sits close to the Gulf, where summer heat and humidity combine to create conditions that can cause heat exhaustion or heatstroke within hours of losing air conditioning. Children under 4, adults over 65, and anyone on certain medications are especially at risk. A dead AC system during a heat advisory is a medical situation.
You smell gas. Natural gas has a distinctive rotten-egg odor added specifically so you’ll notice a leak. Don’t search for the source. Don’t use any electrical switches, phones, or appliances inside. Open doors on your way out, move to a safe distance, and call 911 first, then call us. We’ll inspect your furnace and gas connections after the utility company clears the scene.
Something smells like it’s burning or melting. Overheating blower motors, failing capacitors, and damaged electrical connections can all produce these smells. Turn the system off at the thermostat and breaker immediately. These are fire risks.
Your CO detector alarms. Carbon monoxide poisoning is fatal. Evacuate first, call 911, then call F & R to diagnose and repair the source, which is usually a cracked heat exchanger, blocked flue, or improper venting on gas heating equipment.
Water is flooding from the system. A frozen evaporator coil that thaws, a cracked drain pan, or a clogged condensate line can release significant water into ceilings and walls. Shut the system down to stop production, then call us to prevent further structural damage.
What Can Wait
A system that runs but seems a little less effective than usual. A new clicking or humming sound. A thermostat that’s reading a degree or two off. These are legitimate concerns, and we want to address them, but scheduling a regular business-hours appointment saves you money and gets the same quality service.
Protecting Vulnerable Family Members
In a community like Gueydan, where families often include elderly parents or grandparents living nearby or in the same household, an AC failure becomes more than an inconvenience. Heat-related illness develops faster in older adults because their bodies regulate temperature less efficiently.
If your AC fails on a hot night, check on elderly family members frequently. Watch for confusion, rapid pulse, hot and dry skin, or complaints of dizziness. These are signs of heat-related illness that need medical attention, not just a cold drink and a fan.
Move everyone to the coolest part of the house (usually the lowest floor). Wet towels on the neck and wrists help lower body temperature. Run every fan you can find. If the house becomes dangerously warm, consider driving to a family member’s home or a public space with air conditioning until we arrive.
Local Means Faster
National HVAC chains route their emergency calls through centralized dispatch centers, often in other states. The technician they send might be an hour or more away and unfamiliar with the systems common in Vermilion Parish homes. F & R is local. Our technicians live in this area, stock parts for the equipment installed in these homes, and know the backroads between Abbeville and Gueydan without GPS.
