Once mold grows inside your duct insulation, every time the blower runs, it pushes spores directly into your living spaces.

Insulation Standards for Gulf-Adjacent Homes
R-8 insulation on attic duct runs is the minimum standard that makes sense in Louisiana. But minimum isn’t always enough for homes in Gueydan, where the temperature differential between 140-degree attic air and 55-degree supply air creates extreme condensation potential.
Closed-cell insulation wraps resist moisture absorption better than open-cell fiberglass. For duct replacements in high-humidity environments, we often recommend insulated duct board or pre-insulated metal duct panels that provide both the air barrier and the thermal break in a single assembly. This eliminates the gap between the duct surface and the insulation where condensation typically accumulates.
Signs of Duct Trouble in Your Home

Your system runs constantly. Leaky ducts mean your AC has to produce more conditioned air to compensate for what’s escaping. The thermostat never reaches its set point, so the system keeps running, driving up your electric bill and wearing out components faster.
Whistling or unusual noises. Air moving through a torn flex duct or past a partially separated metal joint creates noise. These sounds often get worse as the system ages and the damage progresses.
Duct Sealing vs. Full Replacement
If your ductwork is properly sized and the layout follows good HVAC design principles, sealing the leaks with mastic and upgrading the insulation may be all you need. Mastic is a thick, flexible adhesive compound that bonds permanently to metal and flex duct surfaces. Despite the name, standard duct tape dries out and fails within a year or two. Mastic stays put.
When the ductwork is undersized for the equipment, badly deteriorated, or was poorly installed to begin with (excessive flex duct lengths, sharp bends, inadequate support), replacement makes more financial sense.
