Wind exposure on outdoor units. Heat pumps extract warmth from outdoor air. When cold north winds blow across the open prairie, the effective temperature at the outdoor unit drops below the actual air temperature (wind chill affects equipment, too). This forces the heat pump to work harder and rely on auxiliary heat strips more often, which drives up electricity costs. If your winter electric bills seem unreasonably high, your heat pump may need service, or it may benefit from a wind barrier or equipment relocation.
Power fluctuations in rural areas. Gueydan and the surrounding rural areas can experience voltage fluctuations, particularly during storms. These fluctuations stress capacitors, contactors, and control boards. A heating system that starts acting erratically after a storm may have sustained electrical damage that isn’t immediately obvious.
What to Do When Your Heater Fails
If your heating system stops working on a cold night, here are a few things to check before calling:
- Thermostat: Make sure it’s set to “heat” and the temperature is set above the current room temperature. Check batteries if it’s battery-powered.
- Breaker panel. Look for a tripped breaker. Reset it once. If it trips again, don’t keep resetting it. That’s telling you there’s an electrical problem.
- Air filter — Pull the filter and hold it up to a light. If you can’t see through it, the filter is restricting airflow enough to cause problems. Replace it and try the system again.
- Outdoor unit: If you have a heat pump, check the outdoor unit for ice buildup or debris. Clear any leaves, grass, or obstructions from around the unit.
