Ground-Up Design vs. Off-the-Shelf
The difference between a designed HVAC system and a picked-from-a-catalog HVAC system shows up every day you live in the house. A designed system starts with Manual J load calculations tailored to your specific plans. Your window package, insulation specifications, ceiling heights, and lot orientation all feed into the calculation. The result is a precise equipment size that handles both the temperature load and the humidity load for your home.
An off-the-shelf approach uses a general rule of thumb and often results in equipment that’s oversized. In south Louisiana, oversized cooling equipment is worse than mildly undersized because it short-cycles: it cools the air temperature quickly but shuts off before removing enough moisture. You end up cold and clammy, which is a terrible combination.

Proper Sizing and Routing
We design ductwork using Manual D calculations, sizing every trunk line, branch run, supply register, and return air path for balanced airflow. During construction, we work with your builder to install ductwork before drywall closes everything up. This is the one time you can get duct routing right without tearing into finished walls.
Sealing and Insulation
Duct leakage is invisible but expensive. Air leaking from supply ducts into the attic is conditioned air you’ve already paid for, escaping into a 140-degree space. We seal all duct connections with mastic (not tape, which fails over time) and insulate to R-8 minimum in unconditioned spaces.
Choosing Between Efficiency Levels
New construction puts every efficiency tier on the table. You’re not limited by existing ductwork capacity or electrical panel constraints. For Maurice homeowners building new, the decision usually comes down to upfront cost versus long-term operating savings.
A baseline 15 SEER2 system meets code and costs less to install. A 20+ SEER2 variable-speed system costs more upfront but uses significantly less electricity per cooling cycle, and it provides better humidity control because it modulates output instead of cycling on and off. Zoning puts a separate thermostat in each zone and uses motorized dampers to direct airflow where it’s needed. The master bedroom can hold 70 degrees for sleeping while the living area runs at 74 during the day, and the system manages both without waste.
