Efficiency ratings of 300 to 500 percent reflect this advantage. For every dollar of electricity the system uses, it delivers three to five dollars of heating or cooling.
What the Installation Looks Like
For a horizontal closed-loop system on a typical Maurice lot:
The installer uses a trenching machine or mini-excavator to cut channels four to six feet deep across a section of your yard. High-density polyethylene piping goes into the trenches in a series of loops, designed and sized to handle your home’s calculated heating and cooling load. Headers connect the loops to a supply and return line running to the indoor heat pump.
After backfilling and surface restoration, the only thing that’s changed is your monthly energy bill. The loop piping is rated for 50-plus years underground, requiring no service, no fluid changes (in most designs), and no intervention.
The indoor unit connects to your existing ductwork. If your home currently has a split system with a furnace or air handler inside and a condenser outside, the geothermal heat pump replaces both the indoor and outdoor components with a single indoor unit.
The Financial Picture
Geothermal’s upfront cost is the highest of any residential HVAC option. The loop field accounts for most of the premium over a conventional air conditioner and furnace installation.
But consider the full financial timeline:
Monthly energy savings of 40 to 60 percent begin immediately. Federal tax credits currently cover a significant percentage of the total installed cost, with no cap. The indoor equipment lasts 20 to 25 years (versus 12 to 15 for a conventional outdoor unit). The ground loop lasts 50-plus years. Maintenance costs are lower because there’s no outdoor unit to clean, protect, or replace.
Over 20 years, the total cost of ownership frequently favors geothermal, even accounting for the higher initial investment.
