Abbeville is where F & R Air Conditioning started in 1956. Our shop is still on South John M. Hardy Drive, and many of the AC systems cooling homes throughout Abbeville today were installed by our crew. When a system we put in 15 years ago reaches the end of its useful life, we’re often the ones who get the call to replace it, and we take that trust seriously.
We’ve watched this town grow and change, and we’ve installed cooling systems in homes across every part of it: the historic properties near Magdalen Square, the neighborhoods along Charity Street and Veterans Memorial Drive, and the newer construction on the outskirts toward Erath and Kaplan.
How We Approach Every Installation
Step One: Understanding Your Home
No two homes cool the same way. A brick ranch built in 1970 with original single-pane windows has a completely different cooling load than a pier-and-beam cottage downtown or a newer slab home near the high school. We calculate the actual load using Manual J methodology, which accounts for insulation, window area, ceiling height, sun exposure, ductwork, and occupancy.
This step takes time, but it’s the foundation of a correct installation. Vermilion Parish’s humidity demands precise sizing. Too much capacity and the system short-cycles without dehumidifying. Too little and it runs nonstop through the hottest months.
Step Two: Selecting Equipment
We’re a Lennox® Premier Dealer, which gives us access to Lennox’s full lineup from budget-conscious single-stage units to premium variable-speed systems. We also install Trane, Amana, Ruud, and Mitsubishi when another brand fits the situation better.
What we always recommend:
- Matched indoor and outdoor components. A new condenser paired with an aging air handler or evaporator coil can’t deliver its rated efficiency. We install complete, matched systems.
- Appropriate SEER2 rating. The minimum for our region is 15 SEER2. Most Abbeville homeowners benefit from stepping up to 16 or 18 SEER2 given the length of the cooling season. We’ll calculate the projected savings so you can decide what makes sense for your budget.
- Two-stage or variable-speed compressor when the budget allows. The humidity control benefits in our climate are substantial.
Step Three: Professional Installation
Our factory-trained technicians handle every aspect: old system removal, new equipment placement, refrigerant line connection, electrical wiring, thermostat installation, and ductwork sealing. Most residential installations wrap up in a single day.
Step Four: Testing and Commissioning
Before we leave, your system goes through a complete verification. We check refrigerant charge, airflow across the evaporator, temperature differential, and thermostat accuracy. If anything is off, we correct it on the spot. We don’t sign off on a job until the system is performing to manufacturer specifications.
The Humidity Factor
Abbeville’s proximity to the coast amplifies what’s already a humid climate. Morning fog, afternoon thunderstorms, and warm Gulf breezes keep relative humidity above 80% for much of the year. Your AC system is the primary tool for managing indoor moisture levels.
This is where compressor type matters most. A single-stage unit cools the air quickly but shuts off before it has removed enough moisture. A two-stage compressor spends most of its time running at reduced capacity, pulling moisture out steadily over longer cycles. The difference in indoor comfort is noticeable: the air feels drier and more comfortable at the same thermostat setting.
