Rapid Growth, Common Duct Problems
Broussard has grown fast over the past two decades. Subdivisions along the Albertson Parkway corridor, around Broadmoor Boulevard, and into the developments near Ambassador Caffery have transformed the landscape. That growth means a lot of homes in Broussard are relatively new, built in the early 2000s through the 2020s, and most of them share a common feature: flex duct systems installed in unconditioned attics.
These systems were typically installed quickly during the construction boom. Speed matters when builders are finishing 20 homes in a subdivision on a tight schedule. But fast installation often means shortcuts: flex duct strung across attic trusses with too few support straps, connections sealed with tape instead of mastic, branch runs that are too long for their diameter, and duct that’s kinked around framing members instead of properly routed.
Ten or fifteen years later, those shortcuts show up as uneven cooling, higher energy bills, and rooms that just can’t keep up on the hottest days.
What We Find in Broussard Attics
When we inspect ductwork in Broussard homes, the most common issues fall into a few categories.
Sagging flex duct is everywhere. Flex duct is supposed to be supported every four to five feet and pulled taut between supports. In practice, we frequently find six or eight-foot spans where the duct droops into a U-shape. Air pools in the low spot, reducing flow to the register it serves. One sagging run can make a bedroom five to eight degrees warmer than the rest of the house.
Poor connections at register boots allow conditioned air to leak into the attic right at the point of delivery. The boot is the metal box that connects the duct to the ceiling register. If the flex duct isn’t properly attached with a clamp and sealed with mastic, air escapes into the attic inches from where it was supposed to enter your room.
Crushed or kinked runs happen when ducts are routed over or around attic obstructions. A flex duct that’s bent 90 degrees over a truss member loses a significant portion of its airflow at that point. We either reroute the duct to eliminate the restriction or, where possible, replace the kinked section with a metal elbow that handles the turn without choking off air.
Duct Sealing for Broussard Homes
Before recommending replacement, we evaluate whether sealing your existing ductwork can solve the problem. Many Broussard homes have duct systems that are properly sized and reasonably well-routed but just have leaky connections. In those cases, mastic sealing at every joint, combined with proper strap support to eliminate sag, can recover most of the lost performance.
We use calibrated duct leakage testing to measure your system’s air loss before we start, then retest after sealing to verify the improvement. Most homeowners see a noticeable difference in room temperatures and a measurable drop in energy use within the first month.
When Replacement Is the Better Call
If the flex duct in your attic is torn, compressed beyond repair, or severely undersized for your current equipment, patching the problems one at a time doesn’t make financial sense. A full duct replacement with properly sized runs, metal trunk lines, and sealed connections gives you a system that will perform for decades.
