New Homes, Duct Problems Already
Youngsville has experienced some of the fastest residential growth in Acadiana over the past 15 years. The subdivisions along Chemin Metairie Parkway, Fortune Road, and the Bonin Road area have added thousands of homes to the city’s housing stock. Most of these homes are between 5 and 15 years old, and many of them already have ductwork issues.
That might sound surprising for homes that aren’t very old, but it makes sense when you consider how construction works during a building boom. Duct installation in new construction is typically one of the last mechanical trades to finish before drywall goes up. When builders are pushing to close on schedule, the ductwork crew works fast. That pace leads to flex duct runs with insufficient support straps, connections sealed with tape rather than mastic, and ducts draped over trusses with bends that restrict airflow.
These installation shortcuts don’t cause problems on day one. But after a decade of 140-degree attic temperatures, tape adhesive dries out, unsupported duct sections sag, and connections that were marginal from the start begin to pull apart.
Testing Your Duct System
The only way to know for certain how your ductwork is performing is to test it. We use pressurized duct leakage testing to measure total air loss across your system. The test is non-invasive: we temporarily seal your registers, pressurize the duct network through the air handler, and measure how much air escapes at a standardized test pressure.
The result is expressed in cubic feet per minute of leakage. In a well-sealed system, that number is very low. In the typical Youngsville home we test, it’s high enough that the homeowner is losing 20 to 30 percent of their conditioned air before it reaches the living space. That’s money and comfort disappearing into the attic every time the system runs.
Common Findings in Youngsville Homes
Sagging flex duct between support straps is the most frequent issue. The duct hangs in a U-shape, creating a low point where air pools instead of flowing. This reduces delivery to the register that run serves and makes the affected room noticeably warmer.
Boot connections where flex duct meets the ceiling register are another weak point. If the duct wasn’t clamped tightly to the boot collar and sealed with mastic, conditioned air leaks right at the point of delivery, escaping into the attic instead of entering your room.
Undersized return ducts are surprisingly common in newer construction. The return side of your duct system is just as important as the supply side. If the return duct or return grille is too small, your system can’t pull enough air back to the air handler to cool efficiently. You’ll notice higher static pressure, more system noise, and reduced airflow from the supply registers.
Fixing Youngsville Ductwork
For systems with good routing and sizing but leaky connections, mastic sealing is the cost-effective solution. We seal every accessible joint and connection with mastic sealant, which bonds permanently and handles attic temperature extremes without degrading.
We also correct support issues, adding straps where needed and re-securing sagging sections to restore proper airflow. Sometimes simply pulling a flex duct run taut and adding two extra support points fixes a room’s temperature problem entirely.

Insulation Check
Every duct evaluation includes an insulation assessment. R-8 is the Louisiana minimum for attic runs, and most Youngsville homes meet this standard on their original flex duct. But we check for areas where insulation has compressed under support straps, been damaged by foot traffic during previous service calls, or been disturbed by electricians or plumbers working in the attic. Compressed or damaged insulation loses its effectiveness and allows heat transfer from the attic into your conditioned air.
