That keeps your heat pump operating in its most efficient range almost year-round. But the flip side is that the long, hot summers (your system runs hard from April through October) and constant humidity create specific failure patterns.
Problems We See Most Often
Compressor hard starts and failures. The compressor in your outdoor unit is the most expensive single component. After years of running eight or nine months of near-continuous cooling, compressors develop wear. Early signs include the outdoor unit struggling to start (you might hear a clicking or humming noise before it kicks on) or the system tripping the circuit breaker. A hard-start kit can extend the life of a struggling compressor, but once it starts losing capacity, replacement is usually the path forward.
Refrigerant leaks at the service valves. This is common in systems that have had multiple service calls over the years. The Schrader valves and flare connections at the service ports develop slow leaks. You’ll notice gradual performance loss, longer run times, and ice forming on the indoor coil or refrigerant lines.
Outdoor fan motor burnout. The condenser fan keeps air moving across the outdoor coil. When it fails, the unit overheats and shuts down on high-pressure safety. In Broussard’s summer heat, a fan motor failure on a Friday afternoon means you’re without cooling until it’s replaced.
The Heating Side of Things
When winter arrives and you switch to heat mode, problems that were invisible during cooling season reveal themselves. A reversing valve that functioned fine in cooling mode may not engage properly for heating. Defrost controls that weren’t needed during summer suddenly matter when frost forms on the outdoor unit during a 35-degree morning.
If your system cools well but delivers lukewarm or cool air in heating mode, the reversing valve is the first thing we check. If it heats unevenly or runs constantly without reaching the set temperature, we investigate refrigerant charge, airflow restrictions, and outdoor coil condition.
Emergency Heat Costs Add Up Fast
Broussard homeowners with heat pump problems often don’t realize anything is wrong until they see their January or February electric bill. If your system has been running on auxiliary heat strips instead of the heat pump itself, you’ll pay for it. Backup strips can draw 10 to 15 kilowatts, compared to 2 to 4 kilowatts for the heat pump in normal operation. Even a week or two of constant auxiliary heat adds up.
