AC Installation for Sunset Homes
Sunset is a small town with a strong sense of community, and that extends to how people choose their contractors. Homeowners here want someone who will show up, do the work correctly, and be around to stand behind it. F & R Air Conditioning has been exactly that kind of company since 1956, serving Sunset and the broader Acadiana region from our Abbeville headquarters.
When your cooling system reaches the end of its useful life, or when repair costs start outpacing the value of the equipment, a new installation is the practical next step.
Signs You’re Due for Replacement
Your current system probably needs to go if you’re seeing two or more of these:
- The unit is 12 years or older and requires frequent repairs
- Your energy bills have been climbing despite consistent thermostat settings
- Some rooms stay warm while others feel fine
- The house never feels dry, even with the AC running
- Your system uses R-22 refrigerant, which is no longer manufactured and increasingly expensive to source
Our Sizing Process
Sunset homes vary quite a bit. Some are older pier-and-beam construction with limited insulation. Others are newer slab homes with modern building standards. The cooling load for each is significantly different, and a correct installation depends on understanding those differences.
We use Manual J load calculations that factor in insulation R-values, window area and sun exposure, ceiling height, ductwork dimensions, and building tightness. This process determines the exact tonnage your home needs.
In our climate, oversizing is a particular problem. An oversized AC cools the house quickly but doesn’t run long enough to remove humidity. You end up with cold, clammy air and a compressor that cycles on and off more than it should. An undersized system can’t maintain your desired temperature on the hottest days. The Manual J process finds the right balance.
Equipment Choices
SEER2 Ratings
The minimum efficiency standard for new systems in our region is 15 SEER2. If your current system is 10 to 13 SEER (typical of units installed before 2015), even a baseline replacement cuts cooling energy use by 20-30%.
Given the 8-month cooling season in St. Landry Parish, many Sunset homeowners find that stepping up to 17 or 18 SEER2 pays for itself over the system’s life. We’ll show you projected savings at each level during your consultation.
Compressor Types
Single-stage: runs at full capacity whenever it’s on. Affordable but provides limited humidity control.
Two-stage: runs at a lower speed most of the time, which extends each cycle and pulls more moisture from the air. This is the sweet spot for our climate in terms of value and comfort.
Variable-speed: adjusts output continuously for the most precise temperature and humidity control. Quieter operation and lowest energy consumption, but higher initial cost.
Brands
F & R is a Lennox® Premier Dealer. We carry the full Lennox lineup along with Trane, Amana, Ruud, and Mitsubishi. We recommend based on your home’s requirements, not on brand margin.
Complete Installation, No Shortcuts
Every installation includes matched indoor and outdoor equipment, ductwork inspection with repairs as needed, refrigerant charge verification, airflow testing, and a full walkthrough of your new system. We don’t install a new outdoor unit and leave old indoor components in place, because mismatched equipment underperforms and can void warranties.
After installation, regular maintenance keeps your system efficient and extends its lifespan to the 15 to 20-year range.
