For the heat pumps that are common in Opelousas homes built in the last 25 years, we test the reversing valve (the component that switches from cooling to heating mode), check defrost controls, verify refrigerant charge, inspect the outdoor coil, and test auxiliary heat strips. We also calibrate your thermostat to make sure it’s staging heat correctly.

The Humidity Factor in St. Landry Parish

Flame sensors are the most frequent casualty. This small metal rod sits in the burner flame and confirms ignition to the control board. Louisiana humidity coats it with a layer of oxidation over the summer months. When your furnace tries to light in November, the corroded sensor can’t detect the flame and the system shuts down within seconds. You’ll see the furnace attempt to start, run briefly, then click off. Three failed attempts and the system locks out entirely.
Cleaning the flame sensor takes about two minutes during a tune-up. Replacing one on an emergency call in January takes longer and costs more.
