Preventive Maintenance Before the First Freeze
Carencro homeowners typically don’t think about their heating system until they need it. That first cold night in late November or early December is when most people switch the thermostat to heat for the first time since March. If the system doesn’t start, or starts and immediately shuts down, you’re calling for repair, not maintenance.
A fall tune-up flips that timeline. We inspect and service your heating system in October or November, catch problems while they’re small, and make sure everything runs when the temperature drops.
Furnace Tune-Up Details
Gas furnaces are found throughout Carencro, especially in the established neighborhoods closer to the I-49 corridor and along Hector Connoly Road. These systems need careful fall inspection because of what happens during the long dormant period.
We start with the heat exchanger. This is the metal barrier between the hot combustion gases and the air flowing through your ducts. Cracks in the heat exchanger can leak carbon monoxide into your living space, and the thermal cycling that Louisiana weather produces (30-degree mornings, 60-degree afternoons, sometimes in the same week) stresses the metal over time. Our inspection covers every visible surface and seam.
From there, we test gas pressure, clean the burners, check the ignitor’s resistance, clean the flame sensor, test every safety switch, and inspect the flue pipe for blockages or disconnections. We finish with a carbon monoxide reading at your supply registers to confirm the system is safe.
Heat Pump Tune-Up Details
For the heat pumps in Carencro’s newer subdivisions and the developments along Gloria Switch Road, our fall inspection focuses on the components specific to heating mode.
The reversing valve gets tested first. This is the component that switches refrigerant flow from cooling to heating. After months in cooling mode, it can stick, and if it does, your system blows cool air when you need warmth. We cycle it and confirm warm air at the registers.
We also check the defrost board (which prevents outdoor coil icing in cold weather), test auxiliary heat strips individually, verify refrigerant charge, and inspect the outdoor coil. Thermostat calibration rounds out the visit to make sure the system stages between heat pump and auxiliary heat at the right temperatures.
Why the Off-Season Creates Problems
Your heating system spent the entire spring and summer exposed to conditions that degrade its components. Carencro’s humidity hovers above 80% for months at a time, and that moisture drives corrosion on flame sensors, electrical terminals, and circuit board contacts. Dust accumulates on burners. Insects build nests in exhaust vents and blower compartments.
These aren’t theoretical issues. They’re what our technicians find on routine fall tune-ups across Lafayette Parish. The flame sensor alone causes more “my furnace won’t stay lit” calls than any other single component, and it’s a five-minute fix during a scheduled maintenance visit.
