Older Gas Furnaces
Erath has its share of gas furnaces that have been running for 15, 20, even 25 years. These older units were built to last, and many of them still function, but age catches up with critical components:
The heat exchanger is the biggest concern in any aging furnace. This is the metal barrier between the combustion chamber (where gas burns) and the air that circulates through your home. Over years of thermal cycling (heating up and cooling down), the metal develops stress cracks. A cracked heat exchanger is a carbon monoxide risk and is the one furnace problem where replacement is usually the right answer rather than repair.
The blower motor is another component that wears over time. Older furnaces often use single-speed motors with sleeve bearings that dry out and seize. If your furnace sounds like it’s struggling to push air, or if you hear a high-pitched whine when it runs, the blower motor may be on its way out.
Heat Pump Problems
Newer Erath homes typically have heat pump systems. In heating mode, the most common issue we see is a system stuck in cooling mode. The reversing valve, which redirects refrigerant flow to switch between heating and cooling, can fail mechanically or electrically. When it sticks, you get cold air from the vents in January, which is obviously not what you want.
Another frequent heat pump repair involves the defrost cycle. During cold, humid weather (which Vermilion Parish has plenty of), the outdoor coil accumulates frost. The system should periodically defrost itself. When the defrost control fails, ice builds up until the unit can barely move air. You might notice a block of ice on the outdoor unit, reduced airflow from your vents, or the system running nonstop without warming the house.
Thermostat Wiring: A Hidden Culprit
Before you assume the worst, know that heating failures are sometimes caused by something as simple as a loose thermostat wire or a misconfigured thermostat. We’ve seen thermostats in Erath homes that were wired correctly for cooling but incorrectly for heating, sometimes because the original installer wired them wrong, sometimes because a homeowner accidentally disturbed the wiring while changing batteries or painting.
