Why Is My AC Running but Not Cooling the House?

Why Is My AC Running but Not Cooling the House?

Your system is running, you can hear the fan, but the house just won’t cool down. This usually comes down to one of a few common problems, and some you can check yourself before calling a technician.

Check Your Air Filter First

A clogged filter restricts airflow so much that your system can’t push enough cool air through the house. In Acadiana’s humid climate, filters collect moisture along with dust and pet hair, which makes them clog faster than you’d expect. Pull the filter out and hold it up to a light. If you can’t see through it, swap it for a fresh one and give your system 30 minutes to catch up.

The Outdoor Unit Might Be Blocked

Your condenser (the unit outside) needs clear airflow to release heat. Grass clippings, leaves, and debris piling up against the fins will choke it. Walk outside and check that nothing is within two feet of the unit on all sides. If the fins look packed with dirt, you can gently rinse them with a garden hose. Just don’t use a pressure washer since that’ll bend the fins and make things worse.

Refrigerant Could Be Low

If the filter is clean and the outdoor unit is clear, low refrigerant is the next likely culprit. Your AC doesn’t consume refrigerant like fuel. If it’s low, there’s a leak somewhere in the system. You might notice ice forming on the refrigerant lines or hear a hissing sound near the indoor unit. This one isn’t a DIY fix. A technician needs to find the leak, repair it, and recharge the system.

Your Thermostat Settings

It sounds simple, but double-check that the thermostat is set to “cool” (not “fan only”) and that someone hasn’t bumped the temperature setting up. If the fan is set to “on” instead of “auto,” the blower runs continuously, even when the compressor isn’t actively cooling. That pushes room-temperature air through the vents and makes it feel like the AC isn’t working.

Dirty Evaporator Coil

The indoor evaporator coil absorbs heat from the air inside your home. Over time, especially in Louisiana’s high-humidity environment, dust and biological growth coat the coil and insulate it. When that happens, the coil can’t absorb heat efficiently, and your system runs and runs without actually cooling. A professional cleaning during a routine tune-up prevents this.

When to Call a Pro
