7 Signs Your AC Needs to Be Replaced Before Summer

7 Signs Your AC Needs to Be Replaced Before Summer

Nobody wants to find out their air conditioner is done in the middle of July. In South Louisiana, that’s not just uncomfortable — it’s dangerous. Temperatures in the 90s with 80% humidity can turn your home into a sauna in a matter of hours.

The good news? Most air conditioners give you warning signs before they quit for good. If you catch them early (ideally before the summer rush), you’ll have time to plan, compare options, and avoid emergency pricing.

Here are seven signs it might be time to start thinking about a replacement.

1. Your AC Is More Than 10–12 Years Old

Most central air conditioning systems last somewhere between 12 and 15 years in ideal conditions. But “ideal” and “South Louisiana” don’t always go together. Our systems run hard, sometimes eight or nine months out of the year, and that wears components down faster than in cooler climates.

If your unit is pushing past the 10-year mark and you’re starting to see other issues on this list, the math usually favors replacement over another expensive repair.

2. Your Energy Bills Keep Climbing

Pull up your electric bills from the last two or three summers. If you’re seeing a steady increase that doesn’t match rate changes from your utility company, your AC is probably losing efficiency.

As compressors, motors, and coils wear out, the system has to work harder to produce the same cooling output. That extra effort shows up directly on your Entergy or SLEMCO bill. A new high-efficiency system, especially one with a higher SEER2 rating, can cut cooling costs by 30% or more compared to an older unit.

3. You’re Calling for Repairs More Than Once a Year

One repair call a year? That’s pretty normal, especially for older systems. But if you’re on a first-name basis with your HVAC tech because you’ve had two or three breakdowns in a single cooling season, those repair bills are adding up fast.

Here’s a good rule of thumb: if a single repair costs more than half the price of a new system, or if you’ve spent more than $1,000 in repairs over the past two years, replacement is almost always the smarter investment.

4. Some Rooms Are Hot While Others Are Freezing

Uneven cooling is one of the most common complaints we hear from homeowners in Lafayette, Abbeville, and across Acadiana. If your bedroom feels like a walk-in cooler while the living room is stuffy, your system is struggling to distribute air properly.

Sometimes this is a ductwork issue, and we’ll check that first. But in many cases (especially with older systems), the unit simply doesn’t have the capacity or efficiency to keep up anymore. A properly sized replacement system solves this problem entirely.

5. Your AC Uses R-22 Refrigerant (Freon)

If your air conditioner was installed before 2010, there’s a strong chance it runs on R-22 refrigerant, commonly known as Freon. The EPA phased out R-22 production back in 2020 because of its impact on the ozone layer.

That means the remaining supply is limited and expensive. If your system develops a refrigerant leak, recharging it with R-22 can cost several hundred dollars. And that’s just a temporary fix. Modern systems use R-410A or newer refrigerants that are more environmentally friendly and far less expensive to service.

6. Strange Noises or Smells When It Runs

A healthy AC system should be relatively quiet. If yours has started making grinding, rattling, squealing, or banging noises, something mechanical is failing. These sounds usually point to worn bearings, a failing compressor, or loose internal components.

Musty or burning smells are another red flag. A musty odor often means mold in the system or ductwork, while a burning smell could indicate an electrical issue. Either way, don’t ignore it.

7. It Just Can’t Keep Up Anymore

This is the simplest test. Set your thermostat to 72 on a hot afternoon. If your system runs constantly and still can’t reach that temperature, or if it takes hours to cool your home down after you get home from work, it’s telling you something.

Louisiana summers are brutal, no question. But a properly functioning AC system should be able to maintain your set temperature without running nonstop. If it can’t, the system is either undersized, failing, or both.

Why Spring Is the Best Time to Replace

Most people wait until their AC dies in the middle of summer to think about replacement. By then, every HVAC company in Acadiana is booked solid, and you’re stuck waiting in a hot house, or paying a premium for emergency installation.

Replacing your system in the spring gives you several advantages:

  • Shorter wait times: Scheduling is much easier before the summer rush
  • Better pricing: Many manufacturers offer spring rebates and promotions
  • Financing options. More time to explore payment plans that work for your budget
  • Peace of mind — You’ll head into summer knowing your system is ready
