Efficient HVAC for Duson Homeowners
Duson is a small Lafayette Parish community along the I-10 corridor between Scott and Rayne. One System Instead of Two
The pitch for a heat pump is practical, not flashy. Right now, if you have a standard split system, your outdoor AC unit handles cooling and your indoor gas furnace handles heating. Two systems, two sets of components, two potential failure points. Your furnace sits idle eight or nine months a year, and your gas utility charges you a base fee every month whether you use gas or not.
A heat pump replaces both. The outdoor unit provides cooling in summer and heating in winter by reversing its refrigerant cycle. An indoor air handler replaces the furnace. Electric backup heat strips handle the rare freezing nights. You eliminate the gas bill (or most of it), simplify your maintenance, and get better efficiency across both seasons.
For Duson’s climate, the efficiency gains are real. Heat pumps work at peak performance when outdoor temperatures stay above 30 degrees. Lafayette Parish’s average January low is about 38 degrees. You’re in the sweet spot year-round.
What We Check Before Installing
Every installation starts with a home assessment. For Duson, we pay particular attention to:
Insulation levels. Many homes in smaller Lafayette Parish communities were built with less insulation than current standards require. Low attic insulation means your system has to work harder, and it changes the equipment sizing calculation. If your attic insulation is thin, adding more before or during the heat pump installation improves the performance of the new equipment and reduces the required capacity (which can lower the equipment cost).
Ductwork condition. If your home has central air, the ductwork has likely been in the attic for decades. We check for air leaks, crushed sections, disconnected runs, and insulation degradation. Fixing duct problems is one of the highest-return improvements you can make alongside a system replacement.
Electrical service. Heat pumps are all-electric. Most Duson homes have 200-amp panels that can handle the load. If you’re in an older home with a 100 or 150-amp panel, we may need to coordinate an electrical upgrade as part of the project.
Sizing Matters
We calculate your home’s heating and cooling load using Manual J methodology. This factors in everything: square footage, insulation, windows, orientation, ceiling height, and ductwork efficiency. The result is an equipment size matched to your home’s actual needs.
Why this matters: an oversized heat pump short-cycles, running in brief bursts that cool quickly but don’t remove enough humidity. In a community surrounded by rice fields and low-lying areas, where the summer air hangs heavy with moisture, dehumidification is just as important as temperature control. A right-sized system runs longer cycles that handle both.
Straightforward Equipment
Most Duson installations use a standard air-source heat pump. An outdoor condensing unit connects to an indoor air handler via refrigerant lines. The air handler contains backup electric heat strips. This setup covers every day of the year in our climate.
Dual-fuel (heat pump plus gas furnace) is available if you have a gas furnace with years of life left and don’t want to waste that investment. But for complete replacements and new installations, all-electric is the cleaner and typically more economical option in Lafayette Parish.
