3 Reasons for a Musty Air Conditioner and Proven Ways to Fix It
Your air conditioner keeps your house cool and comfortable, so when it starts blowing musty-smelling air, something’s not right. That musty odor usually points to microbial growth or moisture problems inside the system. Here in Acadiana, where humidity stays high most of the year, this is one of the most common AC complaints we hear. Here are three reasons your cooling unit may smell musty and what to do about each one.
1. Mildew or Mold Growth
One of the common reasons for a musty AC is that there’s mildew or mold in your vents or ductwork. If you notice a strange smell each time you turn on your air conditioner, it indicates something is wrong. By getting your vents and air ducts checked and cleaned and using UV filters, you can prevent this problem in the future.
2. Dirty Evaporator Coils
Your AC unit’s evaporator coil absorbs moisture and heat from the indoor air. Over time, dust, dirt, and debris can accumulate on the evaporator coil, preventing it from working correctly. The coil can also become a breeding ground for mildew and mold, which is likely the source of that musty smell. Regular cleaning and maintenance keeps this from happening. A UV lamp can also help prevent mold from developing on the coil.
3. Clogged Drain Line
Another reason for a musty odor from your cooling unit is a clogged drain line. The AC drain line is responsible for removing condensation from your AC system. When the drain line gets clogged, water backs up inside the unit, leading to microbial growth and a musty odor. Regularly cleaning your drain line keeps condensation flowing out of the air conditioner instead of sitting and growing mold.
